Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) also called Voice Over 4g network offers the perfect Connectivity solution for the current 4G network’s shortcomings, the traditional calling technology in which the user lost the network connectivity if receives a phone call but thanks to VoLTE technology which replaced the old calling technology to listen to call over 4G network, which means you can use the data while having a phone call.

Telenor Pakistan is one of the leading players in the cellular market launched the VoLTE technology in Jan 2019 for OPPO & Realme smartphones and now the network has extended its VoLTE service to selected Samsung phones.

In the race of the fast-growing digital world, after OPPO & Realme Telenor Pakistan is expanding its VoLTE services to the maximum number of users from across the nation by involving all major mobile phone manufacturers in adopting the VoLTE technology.


Why do we need VoLTE?

The question may pop up here why do we require VoLTE Technology? The simple and easiest description of the importance of VoLTE can be understood from the following real-world scenario:

Suppose you are making online payments and the phone/system is in any critical phase e.g. generating O.T.P. and at the same time your phone rings up.


To receive a request from the cellular network for ringing, the phone has to switch from LTE/4G mode to lower bands like 3G/2G etc. During this switching, the internet on phone gets an interrupt. This interrupt may be unnoticeable for humans but the online payment methods mind this and your transactions may be unsuccessful.


Similarly in another scenario when you are downloading some files over the internet, this switching from LTE to 3G/2G may get an interrupt and affect the downloading.


If you have supported OPPO, Realme, Vivo or Samsung phone then you can activate the VoLTE to experience seamless network connectivity. Follow the steps below to activate the VoLTE. 


How to Activate VoLTE

Contact your mobile carrier to activate the 4G and VoLTE functions for your SIM card. If both the primary and secondary SIM card trays of a dual-SIM phone support 4G and VoLTE, 4G and VoLTE can be enabled for both SIM cards.

Activate VoLTE on Samsung

  1. Go to the Settings app on your home screen or app drawer, or slide down from the top of your screen.


  2. Tap on Connections.
  3. Tap on Mobile networks.


  4. Toggle on VoLTE calls. That's it. :)

Activate VoLTE on Huawei

  1. Go to  Settings > Mobile network > Mobile data. In the network settings area of SIM 1 or SIM 2, you can:
  2. Enable 4G by turning on the Enable 4G switch. If the Enable 4G switch is not available, 4G will be enabled by default.
  3. Enable VoLTE by turning on the VoLTE HD calls switch.

Activate VoLTE on Vivo

  1. You can go to Settings.
  2. Then (Dual cards and) Mobile network.
  3. Click the Toggle button to enable VoLTE HD Call.

Activate VoLTE on Realme

  1. Choose the Settings>SIM Card & Mobile> choose the desired SIM. 
  2. To enable the VoLTE Calls, turn on the toggle button.

Cellular Foreigner Malaysia Roaming Tech VoLTE WiFi-Calling
Umobile WiFi Calling is a new feature that allows you to make and receive calls over WiFi using your mobile number. It helps you stay connected even when you have limited, no network coverage or you are living in a high-rise building where you suffer from poor network coverage, you can also call home from overseas with local call rates and I wonder that there’s no additional charge to enjoy WiFi-Calling with Umobile WorldWide roaming network.

We have discussed Digi WiFi-Calling in our recent post and demonstrated how to set up WiFi-Calling with Digi's Roaming networks. Today we're going to share Umobile WiFi-Calling will show you the free calls back to Malaysia while Roaming with Telenor, Pakistan. 

All U Mobile subscribers on postpaid and prepaid plans are eligible for WiFi Calling, do ensure that your rate plan supports “voice call”. It is not available for plans such as Postpaid MB

Activate Umobile VoLTE/WiFi Calling

  1. Activate the service (send “wificalling on” via SMS to 28118) or Say "Hello" to  Umobile Support to Activate;
  2. Enable WiFi Calling on your phone by going to set or type wifi calling into setting's search bar;
  3. Connect to a WiFi network If WiFi Calling is available, you’ll see the “VoWiFi” or WiFi icon with the receiver icon beside the signals.
Let's have look at the example below (Huawei P30 lite):

Activate VoLTE & WiFi Calling From Settings

To enable WiFi Calling on an iOS device make sure your iOS device is up to date, repeat the steps below to update to the latest version iOS:

  1. Goto Settings>General;
  2. Under the General Menu Tap on About;
  3. Tap the Update button when promoted.

Now we will turn on WiFi Calling from Phone Settings.
  1. Go Back to Settings;
  2. Scroll down & search for "Phone";
  3. Select WiFi Calling;
  4. Turn on the WiFi Calling by sliding the Toggle button;
  5. Tap Enable When the Confirmation Message pops up.
That's it, we have done the necessary settings to enable Umobile WiFi Calling in the next step we going to test the WiFi Calling while Roaming in Pakistan (Telenor, Pk).

Supported WiFi Calling Devices

There are many devices or phones which support WiFi calling. For reference, the followings are a few popular phone models shared by Umobile in WiFi Calling Faqs, So make sure that your device is supported before leaving Malaysia.

Supported Devices:
iPhone: iPhone 5S/ 5C and newer models
Samsung: Samsung Note8, Galaxy S7 and newer models
Huawei: Huawei Mate 10, P20 and newer models
Oppo: Oppo Reno 4 and newer models

Please note that the above list is not exhaustive. Kindly check with the Smartphone manufacturer for compatibility.

How To Make WiFi Calls to Malaysia While Roaming

Cellular Jazz 4G Pakistan VoLTE WiFi-Calling

In 2017 Jazz Successfully tested Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) with its Partners - Huawei & Nokia but later the environment was scrapped at the time,  In 2019 Telenor becomes the first Cellular Mobile Operator (CMO) to enable VoLTE across the network but supported by OPPO & Realme Manufactured Smartphones.


The Recent Mobile Network Benchmark Report Pakistan 2021 published by Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) shows that "currently, 4G/LTE networks deployed by Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) are not supporting VoLTE, CMOs need to improve call setup success rate (CSSR) & the average Call Setup Times (CST) are on a very good level for Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB) calls and can only be improved for pure VoLTE calls."


The report further says that "Zong is in the leading Position with overall good Voice Service but yet they are far away from launching VoLTE in the country. The report suggested to CMOs to further enhance the CSSR by deploying VoLTE networks across the country to ensure high-quality voice calls using advanced IMS core solutions. Through VoLTE, consumers will be able to make calls via 4G data network for better voice quality and users also be able to use voice and data at the same time."

Update 30 Sep 2021: List of Supported Devices Added

last night I got the VoLTE Signal with Jazz 4G in Punjab(Okara) & I was feel secured that now I can avoid roaming charges by activating WiFi-Calling while travelling abroad with Jazz 4G VoLTE enabled SimCard.

There is no list of supported devices provided by Jazz but I'm trying to get a comment from jazz officials on the matter that there should be a list of devices supported by Jazz VoLTE Service.
